The Fifth Disciple

The Fifth Disciple is a fine synthesis of two popular computer game styles: point-and-click adventure and fantasy RPG. The game combines the two styles in a way very similar to table games where players are heroes who complete logic and story tasks as well as fight in battles with enemies. The game alternates between solving problems through objects and communication with other characters, and move-by-move battling. The player takes on the character of Engeor, and for every task solved and enemy defeated, he is given additional experience, which can be used to improve one of 25 available spells. Those can be applied in the course of the game during combat as well as in the adventure parts.

During the course of the game, you play as Konoko, a young woman with purple hair and a mysterious past. She is an expert in martial arts and is also proficient with various firearms, and you'll have to guide her through more than a dozen levels filled with treacherous enemy fighters who lie in ambush around virtually every corner. The game's story unfolds mostly through text memos you find, as well as dialogue in brief cutscenes that usually occur at the beginning and end of each mission. The dialogue is accompanied by close-up portraits of the characters doing the talking. These are generally well drawn, and the voice acting (which is in English) is generally convincing, such that you get a fairly good sense of the characters' distinct personalities.

The game starts off by showing a wounded man, the player's character and the Captain of a vessel called the Parkan, in a powered and armed exoskeleton heaving and panting in pain with a dead man lying at his feet. The Captain barely has time to gripe about how rusty his combat is getting if he needs a medpack after that fight before the station's self-destruct sequence engages. The viewpoint switches between a cinematic view and a weaving first-person view as the Captain staggers to an airlock, until an explosion obliterates the station. The near-death Captain is rescued and brought back to health, which is where the game itself begins.

Raiden III for PC

You might have missed Raiden III's Type-X-powered arcade version, or when it came out on PlayStation 2 last september (published by Taito). Cyberfront is willing to give you another chance by releasing a PC version in Japan on march 17 2006. Unlike recent ports of PlayStation 2 games to the PC such as the shameful Onimusha 3, one can expect Raiden 3 to be less of a disappointment. It should in fact be quite faithful to the arcade version, since the Type-X's architecture is not much more than a stripped-down PC itself. In case you question the quality of Raiden 3, the game does have some fans.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3 Ps2

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles games on the frequent basis that it does. It's a highly visible license based on a highly popular Saturday morning cartoon series, and, despite the fact that each and every one of the games produced for this console generation has peaked at middling levels or bottomed out in the dregs of action gaming, these games continue to sell, and sell well. So, it is with little surprise that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3: Mutant Nightmare follows precisely the same formula that the last couple of games have. It picks up during the third season of the TV show, interspersing TV footage into the game between missions and effectively trying to play out like an interactive version of the show. It also contains the same warmed-over gameplay engine, with just a few tweaks here and there to prevent it from being a straight carbon copy. To its credit, Mutant Nightmare is a touch better than the last game, Battle Nexus, in that it doesn't force-feed you a gaggle of terribly clunky platforming sequences to try to keep things interesting. But beyond that meager distinction, this still isn't a very enjoyable game.

Mutant Nightmare is every bit the predictable Turtles sequel that you've come to expect from this generally mediocre series.

Mutant Nightmare is very much a simplistic beat-'em-up, with each of the four turtles, Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello and Raphael, acting as the playable characters. They've got their respective ninja weapons, as well as some throwing stars and a few special abilities that manifest themselves from time to time. The big new ability in Mutant Nightmare is the ultimate turtle mode, a special state that each turtle can enact after collecting a number of hidden scrolls. It's basically a form of invincibility, making your chosen turtle tougher, and making it much easier to blow through every enemy in sight in a timely fashion. There is also something of a character-upgrade system to mess around with. Beating enemies awards you collectible crystals that you can use in between missions to purchase new combos and abilities. The ultimate turtle mode and the upgrades are a welcome change to an otherwise banal gameplay system. Unfortunately, neither is fleshed out enough to really make an impact over the long haul.

While the first military application of a helicopter took place in 1942, when the German Kriegsmarine began to use Flettner FL-282s as anti-submarine warfare platforms, the helicopter truly came of age as a battlefield weapon during the Vietnam War.
